Dear Colleagues,

I have two important reminders for this week:

We will hold an English Department coffee break TOMORROW Tuesday 9/20/22 in the Lounge from 10-11.  Please join your colleagues for coffee and conversation. 

We will also have a Department Meeting in the Seminar Room on Friday 9/23/22 from 11-12:30. Angie will soon send out the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting. If you need to attend Friday’s meeting via Zoom, please let Angie know.

I hope your semester is going well and that you are enjoying your classes and students. Fall break will be here before we know it! Please don’t forget to send me news of accomplishments to share in the monthly missive.

Christine Arvidson conducted a writing workshop titled “Getting Things Started: Filling your Writing Notebook with Beginnings” for the On the Same Page Literary Festival sponsored by the Ashe County Arts Council and Ashe County Public Library.

Misha Lazzara’s debut novel, Manmade Constellations, which she began workshopping right here in the UNC Charlotte graduate creative writing department with thesis advisor, Aaron Gwyn, was published on August 9th with Blackstone Publishing. After graduating with her MFA from NC State, Misha is back at UNC Charlotte, currently teaching Intro to Fiction and Advanced Fiction Writing workshops. 

Becky Roeder published a co-authored article titled “Phonological mergers have systemic phonetic consequences: PALM, trees, and the Low Back Merger Shift” in Language Variation and Change, the top journal in her field.  She also published a book review of Appalachian Englishes in the Twenty-First Century by Kirk Hazen in the journal American Speech. She delivered a co-authored paper titled “A unified account of the low back merger shift” at the Methods XVII conference in Mainz, Germany.

Mark West delivered a presentation titled “Walt Disney: What Made Him So Successful” at The Barclay at South Park. The presentation was the kick-off event for a series called Salon at The Barclay.  The series is organized by the CLAS Dean’s Office (flyer attached). This Wednesday 9/21/22, Mark will participate on a panel sponsored by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library to celebrate Freedom to Read during the National Banned Books Week (flyer attached). 

Angie Williams and Monica Alston attended the 2022 Administrative Professionals Conference on September 10-15 in Orlando, FL. There, along with over 1600 other administrative professionals, they participated in various leadership, technology, and communication sessions.
